Why a reunion for "How to Talk to People About Things"?

Last year, it occurred to me that a lot of people had taken the class, and it seemed exciting to see whether it was possible to build some sort of community out of that. I wanted to see if we could do a reunion event as a way for people to continue to connect and learn from each other. We had the first reunion in November 2016, at the Gladstone Hotel. 

Around sixty people showed up and met each other over drinks and snacks. You can see some photos from last year's event in this facebook gallery. I think people had a really great time. I know that for me it felt tremendously worthwhile and rewarding to see all these people meet, and find common ground and connection through their interest in the topics of the class.

I definitely want to do it again this year, with an eye toward making it an annual event. 

Where and when does the event take place?

It's at the Gladstone Hotel, 1214 Queen Street West, Toronto. Sunday November 12, 2017, from 6:30 to around 9:30. You're strongly encouraged to show up before 7:00, to take part in the facilitated conversations.

What's the format of the event? 

The format this year will be broadly pretty similar to last year's event: a mix of facilitated conversations (not totally unlike the small group discussions in class) with a more regular party. There will be snacks, and drinks. 

The event starts at 6:30. The facilitated discussion part starts at 7:00 sharp (show up before 7:00 if you can) and will last around 45 to 60 minutes. Then it's a "regular party" for a while, intermingled with a bit more facilitated discussion. 

How do I sign up? Is there a fee to attend?

The event is totally free. Admission includes some snacks and a free drink. But I ask that you register beforehand. There are two parts to the registration: 

  1. There is a facebook event page. That's a great place to publicly express your interest in going to the event, and seeing who else is coming. 
  2. There is an eventbrite registration page. That's where you go to officially "register" for the event, and get your free "ticket".

Is there anything I can do to help?

I'm keeping a list of people interested in helping out. I don't expect I'll need too much help, but there might be some last-minute things that come up: Maybe a small task that needs to get done, or a web page I'd like someone to proofread. I might also want a few people to show up early to help set up the room. If you'd like to be added to the list of people interested in helping, email me and let me know. 

Are there other ways to connect with past students of the class?

In addition to the reunion, there is an alumni facebook group you can join. If you have not already joined that, go join up. Try posting something!
