How to talk to people about things
frequently asked questions
Why a reunion for "How to Talk to People About Things"?
I've been teaching this class for around five years. A lot of people have taken the class. I'm really excited to seeing whether it's possible to build some sort of community out of that, a way for people to continue to connect and learn from each other.
Most people who have taken the class have not met each other. I think it would be great for you to meet!
If things go well, I can see this being an annual event. I can also see it connecting to other events, or to an online community.
Where and when does the event take place?
It's at the Gladstone Hotel, 1214 Queen Street West, Toronto. Sunday November 20, 2016, from 6:30 to around 9:30. You're strongly encouraged to show up before 7:00, to take part in the facilitated conversations.
What's the format of the event?
It will be a mix of facilitated conversations (not totally unlike the small group discussions in class) with a more regular party.
There will be snacks, and drinks.
The event starts at 6:30. The facilitated discussion part starts at 7:00 sharp (show up before 7:00 if you can) and will last around 45 to 60 minutes. Then the party continues for a while (with maybe a bit more interruption from Misha).
How do I sign up? Is there a fee to attend?
The event is totally free. And your admission includes some snacks and a free drink. But I ask that you register beforehand. In our confusing internet age, there are two parts to that:
- There is a facebook event page. That's a great place to publicly express your interest in going to the event, and seeing who else is coming.
- There is an eventbrite registration page. That's where you go to officially "register" for the event, and get your free "ticket".
Is there anything I can do to help?
I'm keeping a list of people interested in helping out. Lots of past students have been helpful so far in coming to planning meetings, helping with online stuff, and more. If you'd like to be added to the list of people interested in helping, email me and let me know.
Are there other ways to connect with past students of the class?
In addition to the reunion, there is a fairly new alumni facebook group you can join.
